Our ambassador Sylvia Earle already mentioned it: ‘Saving the ocean is a team sport’. In 2015 the world leaders agreed to 17 goals for a better world by 2030. Part of the agreed Sustainable Development Goals is #SDG14 LIFE BELOW WATER. The aim is to protect the ocean and its ecosystems. To end over-fishing, illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing and significantly reduce marine pollution of all kind by 2025 can only happen if we all act together. Thus the International OCEAN FILM TOUR proudly supports projects and initiatives with ocean love at their heart. We show you how you can stand up for the ocean and their inhabitants to reach the Sustainable Development Goals and save the ocean.
WARRIORS OF THE SEA
They are the voice of marine life. They fight for the protection of their habitant and the oceans. Since 1977 Sea Shepherd and its ships have been operating on the high seas. They fight with direct actions for the protection of dolphins and tunas, against the use of drift nets and trawls. On their hunt against illegal fishing trawlers and overfishing, the brave Sea Shepherd crew has as well to mess with poachers and criminals.
Get active! Join Sea Shepherd as a volunteer or donate to keep the boat fleet floating.
DO YOU SPEAK OCEAN?
From knowing comes caring, from caring comes change. It doesn’t work the other way round! That’s why awareness about ocean protection is so vital to making change happen. OceanCare has been on a mission for ocean protections for the last 25 years. Worldwide the initiative connects scientists and ensures that research results are reviewed by essentials boards. Since 2011 OceanCare has been a special advisor at the UN.
Learn all you can and share your knowledge with your family and friends! Find fascinating facts and aspects about the world’s oceans at www.oceancare.org and make ocean protection a talking point.
WELCOME TO SHARK SCHOOL
We. Protect. Sharks. Sharks are an indispensable nexus in the ocean’s ecosystem but are continually fished for their fins in too many regions in the world. Or they simply end up dead as bycatch in the nets of the fishing industry. Without them the oceanic ecosystem faces collapse. SHARK PROJECT has been focusing on important educational work since 2002 and offers shark sponsorships as well as a free-of-charge school project for younger generations.
Support SHARK PROJECT in their educational efforts and help make the importance of sharks for the entire ocean known to a wider public. Find more information at www.sharkproject.org
PICK IT UP!
For the last 30 years, the Surfrider Foundation has been pushing for clean beaches, clean waves and ocean protection. Cigarette butts are the most littered item in the world, and they never fully degrade. Surfrider’s Hold on to Your Butt campaign gets butts off our streets and beaches to protect our oceans, waterways, and drinking water. The filter on cigarettes is mostly made of cellulose acetate, a form of plastic.
Regardless of the fact that smoking isn’t good for your own health - stop smoking for the ocean’s sake. Make sure to produce as little plastic waste as possible, when you’re shopping: www.surfriderfoundation.org
DROPS OF HOPE
Through the universal languages of music, art and sport, Viva Con Agua e.V. aims to generate engagement and funds for clean drinking water. Based on the WASH principle Viva Con Agua has projects in Ethiopia, Uganda and Nepal. WASH stands for WAter, Sanitary and Hygiene to provide a sustainable source of clean drinking water in poor regions of the world.
You can support Viva Con Agua as a sustaining member or as a volunteer at concerts and festivals. The easiest way to help others get clean water? Drink water – the bottled goodness of Viva Con Agua!
Fishing nets, sound pollution, shipping traffic, climate change and plastic pollution threaten whale populations worldwide. Marine-protected areas are one way to give whales a chance to recover. Only if human interference is taboo, can whales hunt, breed and nurse their young in peace. The Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC) pushes for the establishment of marine-protected areas and are guardians for populations across the globe.
Adopt a whale and sign up for a whale sponsorship! More information about WDC at whales.org!
